Seeing is believing
When I visited Haiti in 2011 on a service trip with a group from The Global Orphan Project months after the infamous deadly earthquake devastated the country, there were still many buildings that were rubble and many people who were homeless, jobless and penniless. That country was in such shape that parents would sometimes drop their children off at an orphanage so that they would have access to food, water and shelter; the huge iron gates in front of the old, failed hotel converted into such an orphanage were locked every night to keep thieves away.
Despite the bleakness surrounding them and their subpar living conditions, the kids were resilient, playful, funny and eager to interact. It was humbling and exhilarating. One of the most memorable experiences of my life.
